The Special Role of Laver Cup Captains

Unlike ATP Tour matches, captains (and team) are on the sidelines. “I offer a combination of team building, tactics and psychological development,” said John McEnroe, who took a seat behind the tactics. “It simply came to our notice then. It’s mostly basic reminders but I don’t have to tell John Isner to ‘do something big’. ”

Most likely it was the role of the improved cheerleader. “It gives me positive emotions,” Borg said.

“These players are the best in the world and they know what to do and what not to do because other players have played,” he said. “But if they don’t play well, I can push them in a positive way.”

With the replacement of the big three by newcomers like Casper Rudd and Matteo Beretini, Borg said, “I’ll have a few more things to say this year.”

McNarro said his and Borg’s heights and personalities had an impact.

Magenro said, “Even to Roger or Rafa, when they look at Jorgen and see Jorge, they say, ‘I want to make sure I do my thing,’ because there’s a lot of sunlight around Jorgen,” McNarro said. “I hope there is strength on our side.”

Team Europe may be the favorites, but McEnroe has a solution: “I suggested that we should get it because I do not consider Russia to be part of Europe when I grow up. [Daniil] Medvedev and [Andrey] Rublev and it will flatten the playing field. Medvedev won the U.S. Open on September 12.

Of course Russia is in Europe and Asia but the players come from the European part.

“John, we need all the players,” Borg said with a laugh.
